SLO Parks and Recreation began using J. Carroll in 1998 for our largest event – the SLO Triathlon. We ordered around 1,200 t-shirts for our participants and around 400 for our volunteers.
We were so impressed with their level of customer service, we began using them for other events. Parks and Recreation now uses J. Carroll for around a dozen programs each year including youth sports, adult softball, child care programs, and for staff apparel.
Josh and his staff are so incredibly friendly and easy to work with – and, believe me, we can be pretty demanding. Take the triathlon, for instance. We ask J. Carroll to design a new logo every year. They are extremely creative and always come up with something incredible. Still, if we have a dozen nit-picky changes to make, they happily accommodate all our requests.
Almost every year we come up short on race t-shirts. We’ll call J. Carroll with a rush order and usually within a few hours they’ll have them ready for us – and sometimes even drop them off if we’re in a real bind. It’s totally above and beyond the call of duty, but they’re happy to do it.
For us, t-shirts are so much more than something we you get with your race registration. They are a great way to promote our department and what we do in the community. They are the best way to make staff identifiable at an event and are a nice reward for our volunteers. We use other garments, such as embroidered jackets, for awards and special recognition.
In my 24 years of experience in recreation and promotion, I’ve learned that everybody loves to receive and wear clothing that commemorates an experience or achievement. Some people even collect the shirts and wear them for years. Kids, in particular, are wild about getting commemorative t-shirts and J. Carroll is great about designing fun, trendy graphics that appeal to kids.

In athletics, quality promotional apparel is just as important as good gear. We use it for marketing, identification, incentive, and to bolster team spirit.
Santa Clara Tennis has been using J Carroll since 2003. When I came on board in 2006 as Director of Tennis Operations, I thought we would use a Bay Area company. But the first time I gave J Carroll a try, I was extremely impressed with their level of customer service. Since that time, I’ve used them consistently for Santa Clara, as well as for Archbishop Mitty High School and the US Tennis Association, and I’ve recommended them to many of my colleagues.
Timing is critical in my line of work. When we host tournaments with registration up to the last minute, we require very fast turnaround. A late shipment can be a disaster. J Carroll has fulfilled t-shirt orders overnight at least a dozen times without hassle or extra fees. I never have to wonder if the job’s going to get done right and on time. It’s one less headache when I’m when I’m planning an event. In fact, there has been only one minor glitch in all these years and J Carroll more than made up for it by giving us our next order for free.
Design is also important. It’s a challenge to make each new t-shirt design fresh and eye-catching. I admit – I don’t have a creative bone in my body. When I get in touch with Josh and say I need a new logo in a couple of weeks, he always comes up with what I need, whether it be something very professional, or very trendy. It always fits the image we’re trying to present to the public.
As for J Carroll’s track record for solving problems – that’s something I can’t attest to because they’re so consistent and reliable. With so many variables and surprises in the world of athletics, it’s reassuring that the work by J Carroll is always predictably top-notch.
